In 1570, after a short war between the Oda and the Kitabatake clan of Ise Province (Mie Pref.) he was adopted as heir of the Kitabatake clan in order to restore peace, marrying the daughter of Kitabatake Tomonori.

Tomonori was the son of Kitabatake Harutomo (d. 1563) and ruled from Anotsu castle. He found himself faced with strife within his own domain and was compelled to ward off an invasion by the Miyoshi clan in 1566. He was then threatened by Oda Nobunaga in 1569.
